You never know what to anticipate from a Colleen Hoover novel. Because, dear Lord, just wait until I tell you what this book got up to.
Colleen Hoover is a #1 bestselling author of romance, YA, and thriller. She is best known for her 2016 romance novel It Ends with Us.
Colleen Hoover's books are unfortunately very addictive, and I've read roughly five of them. Aside from the odd themes, Hoover's works are usually quick paced and well timed, making them far more fascinating than other sluggish paced romances.
SYPNOSIS: At twenty-two years old, Sydney has a great life: She's in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her best friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers Hunter's cheating on her--and she is left trying to decide what to do next.
Sydney becomes captivated by Ridge, her mysterious neighbor. She can't take her eyes off him or stop listening to the passionate way he plays his guitar every evening out on his balcony. And there's something about Sydney that Ridge can't ignore, either. When their inevitable encounter happens, they soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one...
***
First and foremost, and this is a kind of a spoiler, but Ridge was not at all appealing to me. This is clearly just my perspective, but Ridge was already in a relationship when Sydney entered his life. This definitely made the novel a lot more spicier (just as you like it).
But here's the catch: in this novel, Ridge and his girlfriend Maggie's story sounds more flawless than Sydney and Ridge's. I was secretly hoping for Maggie and Ridge's happily ever after, to be honest.
Except for the fact that Ridge ends up emotionally cheating on Maggie even before physically cheating on Sydney. And, yes, it is the narrative of the novel, but what bugged me was the fact that they made it appear totally normal in the book. Ridge and Sydney were having their beautiful little story dab in the heart of Ridge and Maggie's relationship.
Ridge's unwillingness to delete the illicit chats between him and Sydney on his computer, along with the reality that Maggie may wind up reading all of them at any time, screamed lazy writing in my opinion. Because this is exactly how Maggie discovers Ridge's cheating.
Aside with Ridge being a jerk, Sydney was also really disappointing. I mean, she literally got cheated on by her own lover at the start of the novel and then did it to another girl (Maggie). That's something. It also destroyed her character in the story. There was no buildup.
This made the ending quite disappointing. Even though Ridge had broken up with Maggie, I was still wondering if he truly loved Sydney. You know the saying "once a cheater, always a cheater"? It kept replaying in my head the entire time I was reading the ending. I don't doubt that Ridge would do the same thing to Sydney that he did to Maggie once he finds someone better than Sydney.
Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover had the potential to be a good read. Even with the bleak plot, Colleen could have done a lot more character development for both Ridge and Sydney to make the novel more satisfying.
